In-office Tooth Whitening
Professional whitening performed by our office is considered to be the most effective and safest method of tooth whitening. Done properly, tooth whitening can last as long as five years. We use a safe and effective whitening agent, along with a special light that activates the whitening material. Some commercially available “whitening toothpastes” can be somewhat effective at removing stains and making teeth a few shades brighter. However, many of these products have abrasive substances that can actually wear away your tooth’s enamel.
Will Tooth Whitening Work For Me?
- Teeth can become stained by wear on the teeth resulting in loss of the outer layer of enamel, exposing the underlying layer of dentin (which is darker in color).
- Extrinsic stain occurs from exposure to coffee, tea, tobacco, and other foods or drinks that are dark in color.
- Whitening agents are most effective on certain types of stains, such as extrinsic stains.
- Brownish or grayish stains caused by fluorosis or medications, pitted or badly discolored teeth, or restorations such as crowns, bridges, bonding and tooth-colored fillings, are not areas on which tooth whitening is effective.
